For the past two weeks, I have finished all of my assignments carefully and efficiently. I learned a great amount of new knowledge in Language and Grammar Diagnostic (50 questions, Sunday) although I did not perform well. Week 1 brought me into the skeleton of this course and made me fully understand its structure and general purpose.
In week 2, I have made much progress in both grammar and critical thinking abilities. I was mostly impressed with Lecture: Jean Kilbourne, Killing Us Softly (Tuesday) where I learned about how ads create a toxic culture that harms women. “Women are dehumanized, and the violence becomes inevitable.” “The language and the image of porn have become mainstream; porn has become cool and edgy.” These are extremely convincing arguments and have made me think deeply about our ads culture.
According to our course objectives, we are expected to “practice metacognitive reading of a variety of texts, both public discourse and academic discourse” which I am proud to say that I have accomplished in the past two weeks. I gained this skill through peer reviewing and interacting with my classmates, by finishing Close Reading Practice: Looking into the Magic Mirror, Haas and Trapdeo (Sunday) where I learned different steps to follow when reading an article. I also come to “feel confident of your reading accuracy” as well as “understanding the importance of having a process when you are composing a text, whether it’s written, audio, or a website--this process includes preparing, drafting, reviewing, and revising.” These skills were never been acquired by me in the past.
